Battle Mage Style Guide
The first rule of Battle Mage - First make it real. Then make it fantasy.
Battle Mage takes place in the fantasy world of Wrath, which is divided into seven separate kingdoms. Each of these kingdoms is based on a region of medieval Europe. The armies of Illicia, Clemoncé and Valentia will all appear quite similar on the battlefield, but with subtle differences between their armour and weapons. Just like the European armies of the medieval era.
Illicia – Medieval Germany (slightly heavier armour, practicality over aesthetics). Knights wear plate, bellows helm and heater shield
Clemoncé – Medieval France (slightly more refined arms and armour. Not quite as heavy as Illicia) Knights wear plate and half plate/chain, with kite shield
Valentia – Medieval Italy. Valentia has a mixture of styles. Knights and warriors on foot wear barbute helms, half plate/chain and roundshield.
Beltane – Celtic or Scandinavian tribes. Spectacle helms, scale or lamellar armour, oval or kidney shaped shield and anthropogenic swords.
Acheron – Imagine the armies of Greece brought into a medieval time. Bronze/steel breastplate, armguards, greaves, roundshield and Greek style helm.
Thraece – Imagine the Spartans brought into a medieval time. Same as Acheron but with a Spartan twist.
Ferocia / The Possessed – Ferocia is the evil twin of Acheron and Thraece. Think dark chaos Spartans.
Dragons
The dragons of Battle Mage are not enormous leviathans. Their bodies are about the size of a small horse. They walk on four legs and the wings emerge at the shoulder. They have ridges and plates along their backs but not spikes. Their horns must be a useful shape. Not backward curving. They must be able to drive their horns into their enemies.
Dragons are real animals but they are intelligent and noble. Try to think of them as noble knights in dragon form.
Demons
The demons of the Possessed come in many guises, but they all originate from the same plane of existence and so they must have certain unifying characteristics. Goat like legs horns and elemental skin are common place. Most demons walk upon the earth but a few can fly. Like the lesser demons known as Dark Angels.
A minotaur-like shape is quite common. And like dragons they are not enormous giants. Size could be exaggerated to make for more impressive visuals, but certainly no towering 30 foot monsters.
